Chapter Eight

Earl stepped into Spiron’s Bar and Grill and swept his gaze over the local watering hole. To the right were a number of tables and booths, only about half of them full. The bar area wrapped around to the left, separating the restaurant seating from the area boasting a number of pool tables, a dart board, and several small square tables lining the far wall. A number of guys already moved around the area—two playing pool with a few more calling out encouragement or pointers, as well as a couple of more playing darts.

Spotting Russell Vintners behind the bar, the wolf shifter owned the place, Earl tipped his chin up in greeting. The older wolf nodded back before heading toward a waiting customer. Russell had owned the bar for a couple of decades, and Earl had heard through the grapevine that the shifter was nearing that age where he needed to pull back from society and remake his identity.

When Earl didn’t spot Goliath, he headed to the bar. Using a foot, he snagged the leg of a stool and dragged it close. He positioned it so he could watch the door.

After serving the other customer, Russell headed his way. “Evenin,’ Earl,” he greeted. Leaning close, he sniffed discreetly. A smirk curved his lips as he asked, “What can I getcha?”

Earl refused to blush as he answered, “Sam Adams on tap.”

Russell nodded and turned to fulfill the order.

After Goliath had left, Earl had refused to shower. He’d wanted to keep his mate’s scent on him for as long as possible. To that end, he’d wiped down in the bathroom, but he knew a paranormal’s sensitive nose would pick up on the fact that he’d been intimate with someone recently.

When Russell returned, placing his beer before him, the older wolf arched one brow. “You don’t normally advertise trysts quite like this, Earl,” he stated in a low voice. “Why now?”

Unable to help himself, Earl grinned broadly. He rested his forearms on the bar, cradling the beer between them. “Met my mate,” he murmured after a quick glance around. “New guy in town. Goliath Dickman.”

Russell’s eyes twitched just a little, probably in response to the name, before he smiled. “Good for you, Earl.” Reaching across the bar, he patted his wrist. “I’m real happy for ya.”

Earl grinned broadly. “Thanks.” With a sigh, he thought about his man. “Didn’t think it would happen so early in life, but gods, he’s amazing.”

Chuckling, Russell grabbed a cloth and began wiping the bar. “Yep. I know that feeling well.”

The bar owner had his own fated mate. A lovely human woman named Seline. They’d been together for more years than Earl had been alive.

“You gonna have kids?” Russell asked.

Snorting, Earl rolled his eyes. “We met yesterday. I gotta claim him first.” With a smirk, he added, “Plus, I’d like a few years alone with him before tossing kids into the mix.” While Earl would eventually love a cute rugrat around, he mused, “Don’t even know if Goliath wants kids.
